A ridge of high pressure stubbornly holds on across the south and east of the UK today but it is coming under increasing pressure from low pressure edging closer from the northwest. The next couple of days see that ridge finally give way to a more changeable period of weather, although there are signs of high pressure ridging back in again by the end of the weekend.
For much of England, Wales and eastern Scotland it's a dry start to Wednesday with sunny spells, especially towards the south and east. Many of these areas will stay dry and bright today although the sunshine will turn increasingly hazy from the west with some patchy rain moving into parts of Wales, northwest England and eastern Scotland later on. That rain is already affecting many parts of central and western Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland this morning and this will continue on and off for much of the day although there will be some drier interludes at times too. In the cloudier and damper areas it will be a cooler day with temperatures of 17°C to 20°C, but towards sunnier parts of southeast England it will be another warm day with temperatures peaking at 25°C or 26°C.
That band of cloud and patchy rain will continue to make its way slowly eastwards tonight, but will bring very little rain to southern and eastern regions of England. Clearer spells and scattered showers will follow on from the west where it will be a fresher night, but towards the southeast of the UK it will be another muggy night. The cloud and patchy rain will clear the east and southeast of England tomorrow to leave many areas with a fresher feel and a mixture of sunny spells and showers, most of the showers towards the north and west of Scotland and Ireland where they could be heavy at times.
