The heat builds across many parts of the UK during the next few days, but particularly towards eastern and south-eastern parts of England where there is the potential for record-breaking temperatures occurring by Thursday with some exceptionally warm nights on the way too.
The hot and increasingly humid air is wafting up from the south and for just about all parts today will become increasingly warm or hot. There’s some early mist, fog and low cloud to clear in places, but this will soon be gone and then it will be a fine day with plenty of sunshine around. Some cloud will bubble up as we go through the day, but most of any cloud will tend to be confined towards the far north and west with any rain confined to the extreme west and northwest, although here it will be drier than it was yesterday. In the sunshine temperatures will rise quickly, reaching highs of 28°C to 33°C towards the south and east of England with the London area likely to see the highest figures. Values won’t be as high further towards the north and west but it will still be feeling humid.
Later on today some thunderstorms may break out to the south and southwest and these look set to push northwards tonight, affecting some parts of England and Wales. Not everywhere will see them but where they do occur they could bring torrential downpours, hail and C-G lightning strikes. It will be a warm night everywhere with even northern regions holding up in the mid-high teens, but towards the southeast minimums may not drop below 22°C or 23°C. This sets us up for another hot day tomorrow with any early storms dying out to leave many areas away from the north and west fine and hot. Maximum temperatures will be dependent on the clearance of early cloud cover, but highs into the low-thirties are expected towards parts of East Anglia whilst it will be cooler the further north and west that you are.
