There will still be some showers around across the country today but on the whole a drier and quieter day is in store as the area of low pressure that has brought the showery conditions so far this week moves away to the northeast allowing a weak ridge of high pressure to build in. This is only a temporary feature though as a deep Atlantic low sweeps in from the southwest tonight bringing heavy rain and strong winds with it.
There are some showers affecting northern regions of the UK this morning but on the whole it is a dry and bright start to the day with some sunny spells. Most places will then remain fine and dry today although cloud will tend to bubble up. A scattering of showers will break out by this afternoon, especially across northern regions, but they will generally be lighter than recent days with many areas missing them altogether. In the sunshine temperatures will respond well with maximums into the low twenties quite widely. However, during this afternoon cloud will be thickening towards the southwest of the country with outbreaks of rain arriving across southwest England and southern Ireland by this evening.
This rain will continue to push northwards tonight to reach all but Scotland by dawn tomorrow. The rain will be heavy at times, perhaps with some embedded thunder too, but drier conditions will return to the south later in the night. With that rain will come some warm and humid air with temperatures across much of England, Wales and Ireland holding up in the high teens, but it will be somewhat cooler across Scotland. Friday sees that band of rain continuing to push northwards, becoming slow-moving across parts of the northwest. Brighter conditions then follow on from the south but showers will break out, some of these turning heavy and thundery with temperatures remaining on the muggy side.
