The working week ends on an unsettled note for many parts of the country thanks to an unseasonably deep area of low pressure pushing its way north-eastwards across many parts of the country. As this low moves north so increasingly strong winds will develop on its southern flank later today and into tomorrow with strong to gale force winds gusting to over 40 MPH across inland parts of southern Britain and in excess of 60 MPH around exposed English Channel coasts bringing the risk of some damage and disruption due to the time of year.
For today the main concern is rainfall with a band of heavy rain pushing northwards across the country, this rain becoming slow-moving over northern parts of Scotland bringing some potentially large totals, especially over high ground. Following the rain band will come brighter skies in from the south, but showers around southern and western coasts will tend to break out more widely during the course of the day, these turning heavy and thundery at times. There will be quite a contrast in temperatures across the country with parts of central and northern Scotland seeing highs in the mid-teens at best, but towards the south and east of England it will be quite warm and humid with maximums in the range of 23°C to 26°C.
Winds will strengthen in the south and southwest during the day, especially this afternoon, and this continues tonight with strong to gale force south-westerlies developing. These winds will bring plenty of blustery showers with them with most places seeing showers or longer spells of rain continuing throughout the night. Saturday will then be another unsettled day with unseasonably strong and gusty winds in the south whilst places will see further showers or longer spells of rain, the showers thundery at times, especially in the north.
