It may be coming up to the middle of August but the weather is in a distinctly disturbed frame of mind today as strong winds and thunderstorms pose potential issues for the large number of outdoor events that are scheduled to take place. Conditions will only slowly improve during the course of the weekend with the winds easing, but it is likely to remain showery, especially in the north.
It’s a blustery start to the day across much of southern Britain and Ireland with strong south-westerly winds affecting many areas here, these winds gusting to over 60 MPH in exposed coastal regions but even for inland areas gusts of up to 45-50 MPH can be expected today, especially around any showers. The winds are lighter in the north, but no matter where you are showers or longer spells of rain can be expected today. The showers will be heavy and thundery at times, especially in the north where some torrential downpours could bring the risk of localised flash flooding. Meanwhile, showers in the south will tend to become more scattered during the day with more in the way of bright or sunny spells developing by this afternoon, particularly towards the southeast of England. Temperatures will be pretty academic with all this weather activity going on with highs in the high teens or low twenties for many, although it will be cooler across northern parts of Scotland.
The showers and blustery winds continue well into tonight, but drier and clearer conditions will tend to develop across more southern and western regions with the winds slowly easing. Looking ahead to tomorrow and for many places it will be another day of sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers turning heavy and thundery in places once again, but the winds won’t be as strong in the south. For northern and western regions, however, there will be more in the way of drier and brighter spells developing.
