A rather familiar northwest / southeast divide across Britain and Ireland to end the working week on with low pressure to the northwest bringing strong winds and heavy rain to parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland whilst high pressure to the south brings drier, brighter and warmer weather to many parts of England and Wales.
It's a mild and windy morning across much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland with outbreaks of rain feeding their way north-eastwards, the heaviest and most persistent of the rain coming over west-facing hills and mountains. Little change is expected through the day with the rain tending to become more persistent in many areas, spreading into parts of northwest England too, but the far northwest should become drier later. Meanwhile, for the rest of England and Wales it will be a drier outlook with variable amounts of cloud and some bright or sunny spells, the best of the sunshine coming towards the south-eastern corner. Here it will become warm with maximum temperatures of 20°C to 24°C, but it will be cooler in the wet and windy northwest.
A developing wave feature running north-eastwards along the frontal system across the northwest tonight will bring a wet night for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Some heavy rain is expected and some spots could well have seen between two and four inches of rainfall by Saturday morning. It remains drier for much of England and Wales although some rain may move into western regions later in the night. That band of rain will continue to push eastwards tomorrow but will tend to become lighter and more patchy in nature as it does so. Cooler but brighter and more showery conditions will then follow on from the west and northwest, reaching all parts of the country by Sunday.
