High pressure is dominating the weather across many central and southern regions of Britain and Ireland this weekend but it's not settled everywhere as a deep low pressure system tracking west to east to the north of Scotland will bring strong winds and outbreaks of rain to the far north and west of the country with this rain sinking a little further south during the course of the weekend.
It's a bright and chilly start to the weekend for all but the northwest of the UK where freshening south/south-westerly winds are bringing increasingly cloudy skies ahead of rain moving in from off the Atlantic. It will turn increasingly wet for much of northern and western Scotland today with some heavy and persistent rainfall developing across west-facing hills and mountains accompanied by strong to gale force winds. However, this wet and windy weather will be confined to the northwest with many parts of the country enjoying a mostly fine day with sunny spells, the best of these always coming further towards the south and east. Maximum temperatures today will occur across the sunnier regions with highs in the range of 18°C to 22°C, but it will be much cooler in the wet and windy north.
That wind and rain will sink slowly southwards tonight, reaching much of Ireland, Northern Ireland and northern England by dawn, the rain becoming lighter and more patchy with time. Clearer spells and scattered showers will follow into northern regions with the winds easing here, whilst for central and southern counties of England it will remain dry with some clear spells and patchy mist or fog forming. Further outbreaks of rain and drizzle will affect those central and northern regions tomorrow but the far north will be drier and brighter. Meanwhile, to the south it will be fine and warm once more with plenty of sunshine around.
