The start of the new working week coincides with a new area of low pressure pushing in from the west bringing showers or longer spells of rain to many places. This low will only slowly continue to drift eastwards during the next day or two, eventually moving out across the North Sea tomorrow only to make way for another low to move in during Wednesday.
Monday morning is dawning dull, cloudy and wet for many parts of the UK with outbreaks of rain and drizzle pushing eastwards, this rain falling as snow over higher parts of Scotland where there have been some accumulations overnight. The more persistent rain and hill snow will soon clear away to the east this morning allowing somewhat clearer, more showery conditions, already across Ireland and Northern Ireland, to follow on from the west. This then sets most places up for a day of sunshine and showers, the showers often heavy and frequent with sleet and snow over high ground in the north. As always with showery set-ups such as this, some places will manage to miss most of the showers and stay dry whilst others end up seeing a lot of showers. It will be a rather chilly day with top temperatures of 4°C to 9°C, and the gusty west/north-westerly winds, which will touch gale force in places, will make it feel colder.
It remains windy and showery tonight in many areas, the heaviest and most frequent of the showers towards the north and west but almost anywhere is liable to see at least one and there is an increasing risk of sleet or snow over higher ground. Where skies do clear it will turn cold with some frost and ice forming in places although the wind will tend to keep most places just above freezing. Tuesday will then be another showery day for many places with some more persistent rain sinking southwards during the day.
