A brisk, chilly northerly wind affects eastern regions of the UK again today following the passing of a cold front but we will gradually see that wind easing again during the next couple of days as high pressure ridges in. Indications show that by the weekend temperatures will start to recover again as winds back more south-westerly as high pressure moves across to mainland Europe.
The cloud and patchy rain associated with that cold front is now sinking south across central and southern regions of England and Wales and will clear away to the south during today. This will leave many places with a bright day of sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud, but showers will feed into northern and eastern coastal regions on the brisk northerly breeze, this wind strongest along eastern coasts. The showers will be fairly well scattered, but the odd heavier one cannot be ruled out in the east with a risk of hail whilst the showers will be wintry in the northeast. This means the best of the sunny spells today will be towards western and south-western regions and here is where top temperatures of 12°C to 14°C will be found. It will be much cooler towards the north and east with single figure maximums and feeling cooler still in the wind.
Clearing skies and easing winds will mean another cold night tonight with a fairly widespread frost forming across inland regions. The far southwest will be less cold and temperatures will also tend to lift across northern Scotland later in the night as thickening cloud and outbreaks of rain or drizzle move in here along with a freshening breeze. The north remains rather cloudy and damp for a time tomorrow but for most other parts of the country it will be a dry and bright day with sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud drifting around.
