A trough of low pressure continues to affect central and southern parts of the country today bringing further showers with it but a ridge of high pressure will bring a drier and brighter day to the north and west. This ridge doesn't last long, however, and will be pushed away by the next Atlantic low pressure system pushing in from the west during tonight and tomorrow.
There's a fair amount of cloud around this Thursday morning across many parts of northern England, Wales and southwest England with outbreaks of rain and drizzle at times. To the southeast it is mainly dry apart from the odd shower and there is some sunshine around, whilst for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland it is a mostly dry and bright start with just the odd coastal shower. That cloud and occasional rain across central regions will tend to slowly sink a little further south today, turning more showery as it does so although some of the showers will turn heavy with a risk of hail and thunder, especially across parts of the Midlands and into East Anglia. The driest conditions will remain towards the north and west where sunny spells are expected with just a few showers breaking out. Top temperatures today will range from 13°C to 17°C in the north to 19°C to 23°C in the south.
Evening showers will gradually die out with many places becoming dry for a time, however as we go through the night thickening cloud will bring outbreaks of rain into much of the north and west as the next Atlantic system makes inroads. This cloud and rain spreads north-eastwards tomorrow, heaviest and most persistent towards the northwest, but for southern and south-eastern counties of England Friday should be mainly dry and bright with some warm sunny spells.
