A quiet start to the new working week for many regions but low pressure is winding itself up to the southwest of the country and will be bringing wet and windy weather in from the southwest. However, high pressure is building over Scandinavia and will slow the north-eastwards progress of this system as we go through the next 24 hours or so.
It's a cold start to the day with some frost in places along with some mist and fog patches but these should lift quite readily with bright or sunny spells for most regions. However, freshening winds are already bringing outbreaks of rain into parts of southern Ireland and southwest England and as we go through the day that band of cloud and rain will edge slowly north and east so that by the end of the afternoon it is affecting much of Northern Ireland, Wales, western England and down into central, southern England.
Clearer conditions will follow into the southwest although further heavy showers will break out later across southwest Ireland as the winds strengthen here. Meanwhile, to the north and east of the rain band it will be a mostly fine and dry day with plenty of sunshine around although that sunshine will turn hazy in advance of that rain band approaching, however, for the Northern Isles it is likely to remain rather cold, grey and damp all day.
Temperatures today will pick up after that cold start with maximums ranging from 7°C to 9°C in the north and 10°C to 12°C further south so not too far from normal for early March although the freshening wind will take the edge off those values.
That band of cloud and rain will continue to push north and east tonight but it will become increasingly slow-moving with the rain breaking up as high pressure to the northeast noses in. The far north and east will remain dry whilst heavy showers and strong winds affect the southwest. Tomorrow sees the strong winds and showers in the southwest gradually easing with many regions seeing a rather cloudy day with patchy rain tending to fizzle out.
