Low pressure continues to dominate the weather across much of the country as the working week comes to a close and the changeable theme looks set to continue through the weekend and into next week too.
There is quite a contrast in temperatures across the country this morning with colder air pushing into northern Scotland bringing some wintry showers here whilst mild air hangs on in the south with temperatures starting off in double figures. Whilst there are some bright and sunny spells around, it is a generally cloudy start to the day with heavy showers, perhaps even bringing a rumble or two of thunder, pushing into southern Britain whilst an area of more persistent rain is affecting many parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and the Republic of Ireland.
Low pressure will be pulling away to the east today but many regions will see some showery rain at times, the showers locally heavy and turning increasingly wintry over the Scottish mountains. There will be some brighter spells developing, and as we go through the afternoon largely dry and fine conditions will develop across much of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Top temperatures today will range from a rather chilly 6°C or 7°C across central and northern Scotland to a milder 13°C to 16°C across many parts of England and Wales although the brisk breeze will take the edge off those values.
Showers will gradually east this evening and tonight with many areas becoming dry and it will be a colder night with a touch of frost forming in places. The weekend then dawns largely dry and bright but the next Atlantic system will soon be pushing in from the west bringing the next band of cloud and rain with it although many eastern regions will probably remain dry until after dark.
