High pressure is building close to the south of the country and will bring increasingly warm conditions north over the next few days. However, for today frontal systems associated with an area of low pressure to the northwest are still affecting many areas, these systems most active towards the north and west of Britain and Ireland where some very wet weather can be expected during the next 36 hours or so.
Those fronts are bringing a rather cloudy start to the day across many regions with some patchy rain and drizzle affecting parts of Ireland, Wales and northern England. Apart from showers across northern Scotland, it’s drier to the north and south of this cloudier zone with some brightness and whilst southern regions will be bright and warm today with the best of the sunshine towards the southeast, it will become increasingly cloudy across many parts of Scotland. This will be as a result of outbreaks of rain turning heavier and more persistent over the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland before pushing their way northwards during the course of the day, although the far north of Scotland will remain showery. The rain will become heavy and persistent across parts of northwest England and western Scotland, but it will be more patchy to the east of high ground. Temperatures will become quite warm in the south and southeast with maximums in the low to mid-twenties, but it will be cooler the further north and west that you go with winds also picking up here.
Wet and breezy weather continues across the north and northwest tonight with the heaviest and most persistent of the rain coming across western Scotland where in excess of three or four inches of rain could fall bringing the risk of some localised flooding. Much of the rest of the country will see a dry night with variable amounts of cloud but it will remain mild everywhere. Friday sees outbreaks of rain and drizzle continuing across north-western regions otherwise for most places it will be a dry and bright end to the week with temperatures warming up. This more settled and warmer theme then continues into the weekend for many with temperatures towards the southeast approaching the low thirties.
