A cold front will be erratically sinking its way south-eastwards across England and Wales today to leave much of the country with a colder end to the week as winds sourced from Greenland and Iceland move in bringing colder air and, for some, wintry showers or even some longer spells of snow.
For this morning it is a generally cloudy and damp start to Thursday across many parts of England and Wales with outbreaks of rain and drizzle continuing to push their way east and south-eastwards. This process continues throughout today with the cloudy, damp conditions gradually becoming confined to East Anglia and southeast England by this afternoon.
Clearer conditions, already evident across much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, will follow on behind into much of Wales, northern and western England during today with some sunny spells developing. However, showers will break out quite readily and as the colder air moves in so those showers will start to turn wintry, especially over higher ground but not exclusively so.
Temperatures today will range from 5°C to 8°C in the north and west despite more in the way of sunny spells here to a milder 9°C to 12°C under the cloudy damp conditions in the east and southeast but the strong winds in the north and west will make it feel colder.
A cold night follows with a frost forming in many regions but attention will be turning towards the southwest where wet and windy weather will be pushing in and as this rain encounters the colder air so snow is expected, especially over higher parts of Wales and the Midlands by the end of the night. Tomorrow sees that rain and snow continuing to push northwards across England and Wales with the risk of some significant snow over higher ground. Showers will follow into the south but for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland there will be plenty of dry and bright weather around.
